The Baltimore Orioles bolstered their outfield on Monday by claiming Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from the New York Mets. The 29-year-old had not yet joined the team as the Orioles began a three-game series in Colorado. Robert’s stint with the Mets proved disappointing, as he batted .223 with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs across 58 games this season.
Robert brings considerable upside to Baltimore despite his recent struggles. The right-handed hitter was an All-Star in 2023 when he hit 38 home runs and stole 20 bases, though that remains his only season with more than 110 games played. He carries a strong .856 career on-base-plus-slugging mark against left-handed pitchers, which could make him valuable in a potential platoon arrangement with Colton Cowser in center field. The addition comes particularly opportune as the Orioles recently lost corner outfielder Tyler O’Neill to a shoulder injury.
Robert’s contract includes a $20 million club option for 2027 with a $2 million buyout, while the White Sox had previously secured a $20 million option for 2026 before trading him to New York. To make roster room, Baltimore recalled left-hander Cade Povich from Triple-A Norfolk to start Monday’s game, optioned right-handed reliever Anthony Nunez back to Norfolk, and designated infielder Luis Vázquez for assignment.
