Disney+ has decided to shelve its live-action adaptation of “Gargoyles,” ending development on the project that had been in its early stages. The streaming platform announced the decision after nearly three years of work with screenwriter Gary Dauberman and filmmaker James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster.
The reboot’s cancellation was first revealed through comments from Greg Weisman, co-creator of the original animated series, who confirmed in a recent interview that the live-action venture was no longer proceeding. While Weisman had not been directly involved in the adaptation, industry sources verified to media outlets that the project had indeed been halted by the streaming service.
Dauberman was set to serve as writer and executive producer alongside Wan, with Disney Branded Television handling production duties. The planned series would have followed Goliath, the last surviving member of a warrior race of gargoyles, as he navigated modern-day New York City and worked to uncover mysteries from his distant past alongside detective Elisa Maza.
The original “Gargoyles” animated series aired throughout the mid-1990s and maintained a devoted fanbase despite its limited run. Multiple revival efforts over the years have failed to materialize, making this latest cancellation another disappointment for longtime supporters of the cult classic show.
