Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Martins has positioned Black representation and storytelling as central to his artistic vision. Following the 2022 Sundance success of “Mars One,” an ensemble drama centered on a Black Brazilian family, Martins faced significant challenges in financing his next project amid pandemic recovery and cultural budget cuts in Brazil.
The director’s latest film, “On Behalf of My Son,” marks a turning point with Netflix’s support enabling production of a scale previously unavailable to him. The drama explores themes of grief and reconciliation through the story of a mother confronting the aftermath of her son’s tragic actions. Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival’s Platform section before competition screening at San Sebastián, the film represents Martins’ most ambitious work to date.
Reuniting with actress Rejane Faria, who delivers a nuanced central performance, Martins describes the Netflix partnership as arriving at an opportune moment. The four-year gap between projects allowed his production company, Filmes de Plástico, to mature creatively while capitalizing on doors opened by “Mars One.” Netflix Brazil’s leadership emphasized the film’s ability to balance intimate storytelling with universal themes that transcend cultural boundaries, positioning it as evidence of Brazilian cinema’s growing sophistication and diversity.
