Nintendo is taking an experimental approach with its first Fire Emblem title for the Switch 2. Rather than following the model of the critically acclaimed Three Houses, where players committed to a single faction’s perspective, Fortune’s Weave allows gamers to alternate between four different protagonists and experience multiple interconnected narratives within a single playthrough.
After spending 26 hours with the game ahead of its September 17th release, the experience reveals both strengths and weaknesses. Each of the four main characters—Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda—possesses distinct personality traits and wields unique supernatural weapons that grant powerful battlefield abilities. However, the game’s parallel storyline structure creates significant repetition, with players encountering the same quests, dungeons, and cutscenes across different character routes, which can make progression feel monotonous.
Despite these structural concerns, the underlying strategy and role-playing mechanics remain engaging. The game provides a calendar system that grants players freedom between major battles to strengthen characters, develop relationships, and explore the world. This blend of strategic depth and character development appears compelling enough to sustain interest even as players navigate the repeated content inherent to the game’s ambitious multi-perspective design.
