Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has offered his first public remarks regarding quarterback Thomas Castellanos joining the Red Raiders program. McGuire released a statement Saturday as the university officially announced Castellanos would be added to the roster for the 2026 season.
Castellanos committed to Texas Tech following a court ruling that restored an additional year of eligibility for the quarterback. The decision came as part of a Kentucky lawsuit that also involved other athletes, including Mark Mitchell, who subsequently pledged to the University of Kentucky.
According to McGuire’s statement, Castellanos will serve as the backup quarterback behind Will Hammond. The coach emphasized that Texas Tech intends to maintain six quarterbacks on its roster this season and highlighted Castellanos’s experience and athletic abilities as valuable additions to the program. McGuire noted that Castellanos’s skills would enable the team to continue developing and diversifying its offensive strategies.
Castellanos spent the 2025 season at Florida State after previously playing at Boston College and UCF. During his year with the Seminoles, he accumulated 2,760 passing yards and 15 touchdowns, while also contributing 557 rushing yards and nine scores. The quarterback notably led Florida State to a notable upset victory against Alabama in the season’s opening week.
