Naomi McPherson of the band Muna will step away from performing to be with her mother during her final days. McPherson’s mother, Harriet, is in the terminal stages of cancer, and her passing is expected to occur as the band’s headlining tour begins. The guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist has decided to remain home to care for her mother’s affairs following her death.
The band announced the absence through Instagram, emphasizing that McPherson’s presence during this critical time was essential. However, Muna remains committed to moving forward with performances, having arranged for musician Lou Roy to serve as a substitute for at least the first five scheduled shows, which include stops in Phoenix, Dallas, Austin, Nashville, and Atlanta.
To support McPherson during this difficult period, Muna will host a “letter drop” at the affected venues, allowing fans to leave messages of encouragement. The band also paid tribute to Harriet, describing her as “one of the greatest, most wise and loving people” and thanking her for the wisdom and love she shared with her daughter and the group.
The tour launches September 25 in Philadelphia and continues through October across the United States before heading to Europe for additional shows. The band recently released the album Dancing on the Wall and had expressed enthusiasm about performing the record’s high-energy tracks live.
