Cinelease, a major film equipment rental company, has announced the acquisition of grip and lighting equipment from Quixote, continuing the latter’s retreat from various business segments. The deal represents another major contraction for Quixote, which previously shut down its soundstage operations this spring and has faced significant challenges during the current production slowdown. The transaction will result in approximately 60 job losses at Quixote, primarily affecting workers in the Los Angeles area.
Beyond the grip and lighting inventory, Cinelease is also purchasing Quixote’s production supply assets, which will now operate under the Cinelease Pro Supplies banner. The company has additionally acquired Quixote’s portable restroom and communications equipment inventory. These purchases align with Cinelease’s broader expansion strategy to diversify beyond traditional film and television work.
Company leadership emphasized ambitions to establish Cinelease as a comprehensive entertainment infrastructure provider. The firm plans to leverage its expanding asset base to serve live events and sports productions alongside its established film and television clientele. Despite the acquisitions, Cinelease stated it will maintain its partnership with Quixote, particularly regarding the latter’s transportation division, which features the well-known Star Waggons brand. Recent years have seen Cinelease aggressively acquire complementary businesses, including rigging services and fencing equipment, as it positions itself for growth across multiple entertainment sectors.
