Microsoft confirmed Monday evening that it was addressing widespread service disruptions affecting Outlook, Exchange Online, and several Microsoft 365 business applications throughout August 31. The technology company announced it was actively implementing solutions to restore functionality across impacted systems.
According to Microsoft’s official status updates, users could expect email services to resume operations gradually as the company deployed fixes and restarted specific infrastructure components. The phased approach aimed to facilitate recovery of downstream services alongside mail flow restoration.
The timeline provided by Microsoft did not satisfy all users, with numerous customers taking to social media to request concrete estimates for full service restoration. Some subscribers reported that emails were beginning to arrive, though at a noticeably slow pace, while others expressed frustration with the lack of specific recovery details available through administrative channels.
The outages began early Monday morning when numerous users discovered they could not access their Outlook email accounts. Beyond email complications, the incident also generated reports of broader problems including application access issues and authentication failures. Exchange Online, which provides cloud-based messaging services including email, calendar functions, and task management, experienced significant disruptions during the event.
