Disney has greenlit an anime television series based on the popular “Kingdom Hearts” video game franchise for release on Disney+ and Disney Channel. The project was announced during Disney’s D23 fan event and will be developed collaboratively with video game creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix. According to Disney, the new series will present an original narrative that honors the beloved gaming universe while introducing fans to fresh storylines and expanded world-building.
The “Kingdom Hearts” franchise has achieved massive commercial success since its debut on PlayStation 2 in 2002. Over the past two decades, the series has spawned more than a dozen games and accumulated over 39 million units sold globally, cultivating a dedicated international fanbase. A promotional image released alongside the announcement appears to showcase the franchise’s main character, Sora, wielding his signature Keyblade weapon.
The anime adaptation joins a slate of new original animated programming coming to Disney+, including titles such as “Messi and the Giants,” “Warrior Cats,” and “Journey.” Actor Benjamin Bratt, who announced the series at the D23 showcase, will also voice the character Ernesto de la Cruz in the upcoming “Kingdom Hearts IV” video game, scheduled for late 2027 release by Square Enix.
