Disney unveiled the first glimpse of “Coco 2” at D23, showcasing concept art that features an older version of protagonist Miguel alongside his faithful companion Dante in the Land of the Dead. The studio announced the animated sequel will arrive in theaters during November 2029, continuing the story of the beloved 2017 original film that became a critical and commercial success.
Actor Benjamin Bratt, who voiced the antagonist Ernesto de la Cruz in the first film, will return for the sequel. During the D23 presentation, Bratt hinted at the plot, revealing that his character seeks revenge against Miguel, leading the young musician on another journey to the supernatural realm where he must unexpectedly collaborate with the flamboyant superstar.
Lee Unkrich, who directed the original “Coco,” is helming the project alongside Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen, a seasoned Pixar producer whose credits include recent blockbusters, is producing the film. The original “Coco” achieved substantial success, grossing over $800 million globally and earning two Academy Awards, including best animated feature and best original song.
This sequel represents Pixar’s continued strategy of reviving its most successful franchises. The studio recently released “Toy Story 5” and “Inside Out 2,” both earning over $1 billion worldwide, while “The Incredibles 3” is scheduled for 2028 release.
