Food Network is launching “Sweet Deceit,” a new competition series that puts a fresh spin on the popular Netflix show “Is It Cake?” The program will debut with back-to-back episodes on October 5 at 10 p.m. ET, with subsequent episodes available on HBO Max starting the following day. Actor Josh Peck serves as host for the competition, which challenges teams of three to navigate four increasingly difficult rounds.
The key difference between “Sweet Deceit” and its Netflix counterpart is the tasting element. Rather than simply guessing which items are cakes, contestants must bite into their selections to confirm whether they’ve correctly identified the edible illusions created by professional cake artists. Teams compete for a prize pool reaching $12,000 as they work together to distinguish genuine cakes from remarkably realistic fakes.
The first season is divided into two themed collections. “Sweet Deceit: Trick or Treat” features eight Halloween-themed episodes filmed in locations such as haunted houses, a movie morgue set, and the Magic Castle. A second installment, “Sweet Deceit: Holiday,” will premiere November 16 with eight additional episodes set in festive locations including a cabin, ice rink, and Santa’s workshop. The series features rotating appearances from renowned cake artists specializing in edible illusions.
