The West End revival of “Sunday In The Park With George” has lost both of its leading stars just weeks before tickets were set to go on sale. Following pop star Ariana Grande’s recent exit from the production, “Bridgerton” actor Jonathan Bailey announced he would also be stepping away from the highly anticipated musical. Bailey, who had previously collaborated with Grande on the “Wicked” films, cited his deep personal connection to Grande and the production team in his decision to depart.
Bailey and Grande were cast to portray the central characters George and Dot in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, with previews scheduled to begin in summer 2027. Created by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, the production is based on Georges Seurat’s famous painting and explores the artist’s life and creative struggles. The original 1984 Broadway version starred Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin and earned two Tony Awards.
Grande withdrew from the project several weeks earlier, citing a need for an extended break from public life amid ongoing health and wellness concerns. The production team responded with understanding and support for her decision. Despite the dual departures, producers have confirmed the show’s timeline remains unchanged. The creative team is now actively recasting both roles while maintaining the artistic vision of the original musical.
