Barunson E&A, the Korean entertainment company known for producing Bong Joon Ho’s acclaimed film “Parasite,” has taken on international distribution rights for director Joko Anwar’s latest horror project. The film, titled “Satan’s Slaves: Origin” or “Pengabdi Setan 3: Origin” in its original language, represents the next installment in Anwar’s successful franchise. Barunson E&A plans to present the project to worldwide buyers during the Toronto Film Festival’s inaugural market event in September.
Though technically the third film in the series, “Satan’s Slaves: Origin” functions as a prequel that explores the origins of the curse and demonic forces central to the earlier narratives. The ambitious production spans two continents and two centuries, beginning with a documented mass hysteria event in 16th-century Strasbourg before moving to a 17th-century lighthouse setting on Java’s coast. Anwar directed and wrote the screenplay, which was filmed in seven different languages including Indonesian, Alsatian, Portuguese, Javanese, Dutch, Turkish, and Latin.
Anwar emphasized that the film will provide long-awaited answers for devoted fans while offering an engaging experience for newcomers to the franchise. Production is underway with a targeted 2027 theatrical release in Indonesia. This collaboration extends an existing partnership between the director and Barunson E&A, building on their previous success with “Ghost in the Cell,” which achieved significant box office performance and international distribution across multiple territories.
