HBO Max is expanding its reach in Japan through strategic partnerships with major streaming platforms. Starting in October, the service will become available as a dedicated hub on both Prime Video and Hulu Japan, bringing Warner Bros. Discovery’s extensive entertainment catalog to Japanese audiences.
Subscribers to Hulu Japan will gain access to HBO Max’s Standard Tier at no additional cost, while Prime Video users can add HBO Max as a premium subscription option. The launch will feature popular titles including the “Game of Thrones” universe programs, DC Studios originals like “The Penguin,” and acclaimed series such as “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us.” Classic television shows including “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory” will also be available, alongside major film franchises.
A significant highlight of the rollout is the debut of a new HBO original “Harry Potter” series titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” which will premiere at Christmas. The collaboration represents a broader strategy between Warner Bros. Discovery and Nippon Television to share content globally, with both companies exploring opportunities to distribute Japanese programming internationally through HBO Max.
According to executives from both organizations, this partnership marks an important milestone in expanding premium entertainment options in Japan and establishing a stronger international presence for local content creators and streaming platforms.
