Filmmaker Joe Swanberg is moving forward with his latest project, an untitled dramedy shot on 35mm in Chicago. The indie auteur will write, direct, and edit the film, which explores the intersection of music and middle age through the eyes of two longtime musicians navigating unexpected success.
The story centers on Oliver Cross and Lucas Hunter, portrayed by Shiloh Fernandez and Marc Senter respectively. The pair are the founders of an indie rock band called Fast Star. When a younger, rising rapper samples one of their older tracks, the band experiences a surprising resurgence that propels them back into the spotlight and onto the touring circuit. However, their differing perspectives on aging and their careers create mounting personal and artistic friction that threatens to unravel their partnership.
The production brings together industry veterans and emerging talent, with Kali Skrap, Karley Sciortino, and Chris Tuttle rounding out the cast. Kevin Veselka serves as cinematographer for the feature. Swanberg’s previous works include “Drinking Buddies,” “Happy Christmas,” and the Netflix series “Easy,” while his most recent film, “The Sun Never Sets,” premiered at SXSW before receiving theatrical distribution. The project is being produced by Last Encore and Ghost Gang in association with 3Links Productions.
