Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro Max at its “Surprise and Shine” event, marking another iteration of the company’s flagship device. While the new model maintains a nearly identical exterior appearance to its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, significant internal upgrades distinguish the two devices. Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max begin September 12, with a September 18 launch date.
Pricing represents one notable change, with both Pro models commanding a $100 increase over last year’s versions. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. On the aesthetic front, Apple introduced a fresh color palette featuring burgundy, glacier blue, black, and silver options—notably restoring the black finish that was absent from the iPhone 17 Pro Max lineup. The devices share identical dimensions at 6.9 inches, though the new model weighs slightly more at 8.78 ounces compared to 8.22 ounces for its predecessor.
Camera improvements represent a major upgrade. The iPhone 18 Pro Max features a physical variable aperture on its main lens, granting users enhanced control over lighting and depth of field. Additional photographic enhancements include intelligent focus tracking, cinematic video capabilities, and superior low-light performance. The new A20 Pro processor powers these features and Apple’s redesigned AI assistant, delivering significant performance gains over the preceding A19 Pro chip. Battery life has also expanded substantially, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max achieving 45 hours of video playback—six hours longer than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
