Instagram is implementing new measures to combat the proliferation of artificial intelligence-generated accounts masquerading as real people. The social media platform has introduced a revised labeling system, changing the previous “AI creator” designation to “AI-generated profile” to provide clearer notification to users when they encounter accounts featuring synthetic individuals rather than authentic humans.
The company acknowledged user frustration regarding deceptive profiles in an official announcement, noting that people feel misled when they discover an account they believed represented a genuine person is actually AI-generated. Instagram emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that users deserve straightforward information about whether profiles showcase artificial personas.
To enforce compliance, Instagram will actively identify accounts that neglect to properly self-label their AI-generated profiles and impose restrictions on their visibility. Non-compliant accounts will experience reduced reach, with their content excluded from algorithmic recommendations on Reels and Explore features, though followers will continue to see their posts. Account owners have the opportunity to contest any mistaken flagging through an appeals process.
The platform clarified that creators utilizing AI tools to generate content rather than creating fake profiles are exempt from the labeling requirement, meaning the update specifically targets deceptive accounts rather than all AI-assisted content creation on the platform.
