Spanish startup Liux is launching a new electric microcar designed to compete in Europe’s increasingly crowded compact vehicle market. The company manufactures the Liux Big in Spain, operating one of the continent’s newest automotive facilities and marking the first new car plant to open in the country in over three decades. Despite establishing European production, company leadership acknowledges that achieving a fully independent supply chain remains unrealistic in today’s automotive landscape.
Sustainability forms the core of Liux’s competitive strategy. The vehicle features a fiber body constructed from an innovative linen-based biocomposite specifically engineered for recycling and reuse. The company emphasizes designing products that maintain material integrity throughout their lifecycle, enabling genuine circular manufacturing rather than theoretical sustainability. Additional environmental features include home charging capabilities compatible with renewable energy sources and a construction approach that prioritizes durability over rapid obsolescence.
Having secured European regulatory approval, Liux expects to begin deliveries in the first half of 2027. The startup has attracted significant early interest, with over 7,500 prospective customers on its waiting list. The company projects production capacity could reach 20,000 vehicles annually by 2030. Pricing will remain below €18,000 before subsidies, positioning the Liux Big at the premium end of the microcar segment while targeting middle-aged urban residents seeking an affordable second vehicle.
