The Tragically Hip’s final concert will be commemorated with a special broadcast marking a decade since the iconic Canadian rock band’s last performance. The group took the stage in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario on August 20, 2016, in what became their final show after lead singer Gord Downie disclosed his terminal brain cancer diagnosis earlier that year.
Canadian viewers can watch “The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration” on CBC television or stream it through CBC Gem at 7 p.m. local time. The special will feature the complete concert recording alongside a new documentary film directed by Downie’s brother that includes previously unreleased tour footage and reflections from prominent Canadians about the band’s cultural impact.
International audiences outside Canada can access the broadcast using a virtual private network service. Despite his diagnosis, Downie completed the band’s cross-Canada tour and released a solo album that same year. He passed away in October 2017, one year after the Kingston concert. The milestone is also being recognized through a commemorative vinyl and CD release featuring live recordings from the final tour dates.
