Star actor Ethan Peck initially harbored doubts about the episode’s premise but found his perspective shifting once the puppets arrived on set. Rather than portraying a puppet version himself, Peck became the sole cast member to interact directly with the puppet crew, an opportunity he found rewarding. Director Jordan Canning tapped Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to bring the episode to life, leveraging her previous work on the Fraggle Rock reboot to establish the connection.
The Jim Henson team approached each puppet with meticulous attention to detail, exaggerating the distinctive features of the actors they represented. The puppet versions showcased character-specific traits, from Captain Pike’s prominent hair to Commander Pelia’s signature spiral curls, which required innovative construction techniques involving synthetic horsehair. Adapting the Enterprise sets, originally designed for human actors, presented additional logistical puzzles that the puppeteers successfully overcame to create what many consider one of Star Trek’s most humorous episodes.
