The Arizona Cardinals have made progress in their effort to return cornerback Garrett Williams to the field. The defensive back was cleared from the physically unable to perform list and activated for practice Thursday, approximately eight months after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in December.
Head coach Mike LaFleur indicated that Williams could potentially be ready for the team’s Week 1 matchup, with more than three weeks of preparation time available before the regular season begins. LaFleur acknowledged the extensive rehabilitation work completed by Williams and the team’s medical staff to reach this milestone.
Williams, who is in the final year of his contract, demonstrated strong performance as the Cardinals’ slot cornerback before his injury. In 10 games last season, he recorded 46 tackles, five pass breakups, one forced fumble and one interception. However, his coverage statistics were inconsistent, as he allowed 28 receptions on 35 targets with five touchdowns. Prior to the Achilles injury, Williams had already missed six games due to a knee injury.
The cornerback will resume his role as the team’s starting nickel corner once fully healthy. Sean Murphy-Bunting has occupied the position during Williams’ absence. Additionally, linebacker Josh Sweat and tight end Tip Reiman remain on the PUP list, though Reiman is not anticipated to be available for the season opener.
