The cast and crew of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” faced unique production challenges when filming an episode at an actual Philadelphia Phillies game during the show’s fifth season. Director and executive producer Randall Einhorn led the ambitious undertaking, which resulted in an Emmy nomination for outstanding directing for a comedy series.
Filming at a live sporting event required extensive planning and creative problem-solving. The production team spent one day shooting with 400 extras in the stands, using protective screens to maintain audio and lighting quality. When wind conditions prevented those screens from being used during the actual game, Einhorn adapted his approach, using natural lighting changes throughout the day to convey the passage of time more effectively than traditional editing techniques.
Technical coordination proved equally demanding, with Einhorn managing approximately 70 camera pans that needed to connect footage from the field, the stands, and the stadium’s massive scoreboard display. The episode’s script called for Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber to hit a home run, but the athlete exceeded expectations by hitting four during filming. Actor Sheryl Lee Ralph’s genuine reactions of surprise and delight were captured in real-time as the mockumentary format allowed cameras to continuously film the cast’s natural responses.
Despite the logistical complexities and technical difficulties—including a malfunctioning communication device—Einhorn maintained composure throughout the shoot, crediting his experience and philosophy that remaining calm ultimately serves the production better than becoming frustrated.
