Director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed that a third installment of the “National Treasure” franchise is in active development. During a live recording of the “National Treasure Hunt” podcast, Turteltaub revealed the news to the audience, emphasizing that they were hearing about the project before anyone else. He stressed that while the film is moving forward, various unforeseen circumstances could still affect its production timeline.
According to Turteltaub, a screenplay is already being developed for the new adventure film. He indicated that the creative team is making efforts to reunite the original cast members, though specific details about returning actors have not been disclosed. Representatives from Disney and star Nicolas Cage have not yet provided statements regarding the announcement.
The “National Treasure” series has been a significant box office success for the studio. The original 2004 film earned $347 million worldwide, while its 2007 sequel “The Book of Secrets” grossed $459 million globally. Additionally, Disney released a streaming series called “Edge of History” on Disney+ in 2022, though that program concluded after a single season.
