HBO has greenlit a new dark mystery series titled “Imposter,” marking a significant development for the premium network. The project originates from writer and executive producer Kalos Chu and will be produced by Lauren LeFranc and Rachel Jacobs through their production company Acid and Tender, which maintains an overall deal with HBO. This represents the inaugural original series to emerge from that partnership agreement.
The series centers on a newcomer navigating his first year at a prestigious university, according to the show’s official description. The project generated considerable industry buzz after being shopped to networks in early August before ultimately landing at the network. If greenlit to series, this production would represent Chu’s debut professional screenwriting credit, following his 2023 graduation from Harvard and internships at companies including Lucasfilm.
LeFranc brings substantial television credentials to the venture, having created and developed HBO’s critically acclaimed limited series “The Penguin,” a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ film “The Batman.” That project garnered 24 Emmy nominations and won nine awards, including recognition for supporting actress Cristin Milioti. LeFranc previously served as showrunner on YouTube Premium’s “Impulse” and has contributed to series including “Agents of SHIELD” and “Chuck.”
