Major publishing companies are launching an ambitious literacy initiative tied to the annual Back to Hogwarts Day celebration on September 1st. The coordinated effort will distribute over 200,000 copies of “Harry Potter” books to schools, hospitals, and underserved communities across multiple continents, introducing readers worldwide to J.K. Rowling’s beloved series.
Scholastic will lead the charge in North America by donating 100,000 copies of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” to disadvantaged areas throughout the United States. The publisher will also partner with Audible and Pottermore to provide 100,000 audiobook versions to teachers participating in book clubs. Meanwhile, Bloomsbury is handling distribution across the United Kingdom, working with organizations like The National Literacy Trust and Give a Book to reach readers in need.
To maximize accessibility, Pottermore is removing digital waitlists for eBook and audiobook editions throughout September. Additionally, audiobook narrations by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale will be available for free on multiple platforms including YouTube, Audible, and Spotify, marking the first time the Jim Dale version will be accessible to international audiences via YouTube.
The initiative coincides with heightened excitement surrounding the highly anticipated HBO adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” premiering on September 1st. Celebrations will include a special fan experience event in London featuring exclusive giveaways and interactive activities from across the “Harry Potter” universe.
