Two University of Illinois women’s basketball players made their mark at the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament this week. The competition, held in Guadalajara, Mexico, showcased strong performances from both Aaliyah Guyton representing Brazil and Cearah Parchment playing for Canada.
Guyton delivered a commanding performance as Brazil secured their first tournament victory with a narrow 56-53 triumph over New Zealand. The Illini guard led her team with 18 points while also contributing four rebounds, four assists, and three steals across more than 34 minutes of play. She connected on three of five three-point attempts, establishing herself as Brazil’s leading scorer for the second consecutive game. Teammate Lety Vasconcelos also contributed to Brazil’s effort, adding three points and two assists to the winning effort.
Meanwhile, Parchment made a significant impact for Canada, which overwhelmed the Philippines 85-38 in a dominant performance. Despite playing only nine minutes, the forward scored nine points, pulled down six rebounds, blocked two shots, and recorded one steal. This marked a substantial increase in her contributions compared to her previous game against Senegal, where she appeared for just three minutes.
Both teams have advanced in the tournament with strong momentum. Brazil will face Argentina on Thursday, while Canada prepares to take on Mexico as they continue their quest toward Olympic qualification.
