Netflix has acquired a documentary feature centered on Jessica Simpson’s life and career, marking a significant addition to the streaming platform’s growing slate of celebrity documentaries. The project will be helmed by Joe Pearlman, the acclaimed director behind the Netflix documentary about Robbie Williams. Through this feature film, viewers will gain insight into Simpson’s journey as both a performer and businesswoman.
Simpson rose to prominence during the late 1990s and early 2000s alongside artists such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Her career has spanned multiple industries, including music, where she has sold over 20 million records globally. The entertainer also became a television pioneer by starring in MTV’s “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” which documented her marriage to 98 Degrees member Nick Lachey across three seasons from 2003 to 2005.
Beyond the music industry, Simpson has built a billion-dollar fashion empire and established herself as a published author. Her 2020 memoir “Open Book” achieved bestseller status on the New York Times list. Following a 15-year break from recording, Simpson recently returned to music with the EP releases “Nashville Canyon: Part 1 & Part 2,” which received favorable critical reception.
Pearlman brings extensive experience to the documentary, having previously directed acclaimed projects including “Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now” and “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.” The production will be overseen by Gunpowder & Sky, the company led by Van Toffler, who originally oversaw Simpson’s MTV reality series.
