Scientists have celebrated the FDA approval of bemotrizinol (BEMT), a novel sunscreen ingredient that marks a significant advancement in solar protection. Developed by Swiss chemists in the late 1990s, the compound has been widely used in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Canada for over two decades. The United States approval comes nearly 30 years after the last new sunscreen ingredient reached the American market, reflecting differences in how various countries regulate sun protection products.
The key innovation lies in BEMT’s ability to block a previously difficult-to-filter segment of ultraviolet radiation. While current American sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays, they leave a narrow gap in coverage around 370 to 400 nanometers. This oversight means harmful radiation can still penetrate skin cells. BEMT’s larger molecular structure allows it to address this vulnerability while remaining stable on the skin for six to eight hours, potentially lasting longer than existing formulations.
Beyond superior sun protection, dermatologists highlight practical advantages that could increase product usage rates. BEMT reduces common complaints associated with traditional sunscreens, including greasy residue, white cast on skin, and clothing stains. Additionally, its composition requires fewer additives, creating lighter formulations. Environmental concerns also favor the new ingredient, as previous sunscreen chemicals have been linked to coral reef damage and potential endocrine disruption in wildlife.
BEMT sunscreen products are expected to reach store shelves in September under the brand name Parsol Shield. Medical experts emphasize that consistent sunscreen use starting in childhood could reduce adult skin cancer rates by approximately 80 percent, making this FDA approval particularly significant for public health.
