The inaugural Esports Nations Cup, originally scheduled for November in Riyadh, has been postponed to 2027. The Esports Foundation cited the unstable regional environment, particularly the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, as the primary reason for the delay. This marks the second major venue disruption for the organization following their earlier relocation of the Esports World Cup to Paris.
The Esports Nations Cup was designed to showcase competitive gaming on a national level, bringing together teams representing countries and territories from around the globe. Saudi Arabia’s government has been instrumental in supporting the tournament as part of a broader strategy to establish the Kingdom as a significant force in international esports. Critics have characterized these initiatives as attempts to enhance the nation’s global image while deflecting attention from human rights concerns and LGBTQ+ restrictions.
Esports Foundation leadership emphasized that the postponement reflects their commitment to delivering a premier inaugural event under optimal circumstances. CEO Ralf Reichert stated that the organization remains dedicated to hosting the tournament in Riyadh and assured stakeholders—including partners, publishers, and the gaming community—that the delay will provide necessary stability. The foundation also reiterated that Saudi Arabia maintains full capability to host major sporting and entertainment events despite the regional tensions.
