England’s Jack Whaley has secured a spot on the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team following his U.S. Amateur championship victory at Merion. The 22-year-old Florida State senior earned an automatic selection after winning the Havemeyer Trophy, impressing captain Dean Robertson with his performance in challenging weather conditions during the tournament.
Whaley joins six returning players from last year’s squad that fell to the United States 17-9 at Cypress Point. The roster includes Englishmen Tyler Weaver, Luke Poulter, and Eliot Baker, along with Scots Niall Shiels Donegan and Connor Graham, and Ireland’s Stuart Grehan, the British Amateur champion. Three additional Englishmen—Ben Bolton, Sam Easterbrook, and Josh Hill—complete the ten-person team, with Hill’s selection drawing particular attention as a surprising choice.
Notably, Grehan is the only Irish representative on the team, while his countrymen Thomas Higgins and David Howard have been named as alternates. Robertson defended his selections, stating they were made fairly and without bias. The Walker Cup competition takes place September 5-6 at Lahinch in Ireland, marking the first consecutive-year staging of the event since 1922-1924.
The squad features seven players from American universities and includes six competitors ranked in the world’s top 25. Robertson has emphasized preparation and execution, particularly focusing on singles play after the team’s late-round struggles during last year’s competition.
