ESPN is preparing to release an extensive documentary series centered on renowned football coach Nick Saban. The six-episode program, titled “Saban,” will premiere on October 8 at 6 p.m. on ESPN, offering viewers an in-depth exploration of the coach’s career, background, and coaching philosophy across multiple decades and institutions.
The production, developed by Words + Pictures in collaboration with ESPN, features unprecedented access to archival material from Saban’s 17-year tenure at the University of Alabama. Directors obtained hundreds of hours of previously unreleased footage that had been kept confidential during his time coaching. The archive captures intimate moments including locker room speeches following significant victories and defeats, providing audiences with a behind-the-scenes perspective rarely seen by the public.
Beyond Alabama, the documentary examines Saban’s coaching journey at Louisiana State University and his stint with the Miami Dolphins professional team. The series incorporates interviews with more than 70 individuals connected to Saban, including Bill Belichick, notable former players such as Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa, and other coaches who worked alongside him. Saban and his wife Terry also participated in the project.
According to director Russell Dinallo, while viewers may be familiar with Saban’s well-known intense demeanor, the series aims to reveal lesser-known aspects of his character and personal narrative. The production team emphasizes that beneath the coach’s famously rigorous approach lies a more nuanced human story worthy of exploration.
