Filmmaker James Erskine is directing an upcoming documentary centered on legendary Formula One champion Niki Lauda, with WestEnd Films managing international distribution rights. The project, currently in production, will have its market debut at the Toronto Film Festival, where early clips will be presented to potential buyers from around the globe.
The documentary explores multiple dimensions of Lauda’s extraordinary life, from his dominance in motorsport to his harrowing near-fatal accident in 1976 and subsequent racing comeback. The film also examines his business ventures beyond the racetrack, particularly his founding of an airline and his efforts to investigate a tragic aircraft disaster connected to his company.
The production features previously unreleased personal interviews with Lauda alongside contributions from prominent figures in Formula One history, including multiple world champions and team principals. The cast of participants spans generations of racing talent, from Mario Andretti to contemporary drivers like Nico Rosberg and Kimi Antonelli. Actor Daniel Brühl, who portrayed Lauda in the film “Rush,” also participates in the documentary.
Erskine, known for acclaimed sports documentaries including “Copa 71” and “Sachin: A Billion Dreams,” will craft a multifaceted narrative exploring Lauda’s various identities as champion, entrepreneur, and survivor. The film is slated for theatrical and broadcast release across multiple European territories through partnerships with Sky, ORF, and Canal+.
