Focus Features has officially announced the complete cast for director Sarah Polley’s film adaptation of “The Bell Jar.” The project marks the acting debut of two-time Oscar-winning musician Billie Eilish, who will portray Esther Greenwood, the central character from Sylvia Plath’s seminal novel. The story follows an aspiring writer navigating a magazine internship in New York City while confronting challenges related to ambition, personal identity, and mental health within restrictive 1950s societal norms.
The supporting ensemble features several accomplished performers joining Eilish in the production. Oscar and Emmy nominee Carey Mulligan will play Esther’s mother, while Gotham Award winner Danielle Deadwyler takes on the role of Dr. Nolan, Esther’s psychiatrist. Additional cast members include Ike Barinholtz as Lenny, a New York radio personality, and Connor Storrie as Marco, a character central to an uncomfortable blind date sequence.
The film’s ensemble cast also comprises Dylan Hawco, Lili Taylor, Ella Beatty, and Maggie Kuntz in supporting roles. Director Polley adapted the screenplay herself. Production has concluded, and the project is being produced through Plan B, Studiocanal, and Joy Coalition, with Focus Features handling distribution. The studio has not yet announced a release date for the film.
