Chris Hansen, the former host of the NBC series “To Catch a Predator,” has become embroiled in a dispute with the producers of “Primetime,” a forthcoming film starring Robert Pattinson that dramatizes the investigative program. Hansen visited A24’s New York offices earlier this week to preview the film ahead of its Venice Film Festival debut, but left without viewing it after refusing to sign a non-disclosure agreement that he claimed would compromise his legal rights.
During an appearance on Fox News, Hansen stated that the studio’s legal team demanded he “sign away” his rights to his name, image, and brand before watching the movie. He characterized the agreement as overly restrictive and said his lawyers advised against signing it. However, a representative connected to the production countered Hansen’s account, asserting that the NDA was a standard document required of all preview audiences to prevent spoilers and protect intellectual property, and specifically denied that it required relinquishing rights to his identity or brand.
Hansen expressed frustration that he had not been informed about the project when filming began and only discovered its existence after production was underway. He noted that he has no financial interest in the film and suggested the studio’s sudden concern for his satisfaction seemed disingenuous. With the dispute unresolved, Hansen will have to wait until the film’s theatrical release on September 25 to see how Pattinson portrays him.
