Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for the Latin indie-rock band Camilo Séptimo, was discovered dead Tuesday along with multiple family members in their home near Mexico City. The tragic incident claimed the lives of Meléndez’s wife, who was expecting their second child, their young daughter, and a household nanny. A family pet was also found at the scene, while a six-year-old child survived the ordeal.
According to authorities, the victims sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Meléndez’s wife Ana Paula, age 35, was four months pregnant at the time of her death. Mexico’s secretary of public security confirmed that law enforcement had apprehended two suspects in connection with the murders. Investigators determined that one of the arrested individuals had worked alongside Meléndez and allegedly exploited that professional relationship to gain entry to the residence.
Meléndez co-founded Camilo Séptimo in 2013, establishing the group as a notable presence in the indie-rock and electro-pop music scene. The band released their debut album in 2017 and their most recent record this past May. Bandmates released a statement expressing profound sorrow and honoring Meléndez’s memory, contributions to music, and personal character. The remaining members also extended their condolences to Meléndez’s loved ones and the family of the deceased nanny.
