Beyoncé has committed $1 million in personal funds to assist those affected by a devastating earthquake in Colombia. Through an announcement made by her company Parkwood Entertainment on Tuesday, the Grammy-winning artist specified that the contribution will supply food and shelter to communities hardest hit by the 7.4 magnitude seismic event that struck Chocó on August 10.
The August earthquake had severe consequences for the region, leaving at least 312 people dead and destroying nearly 29,000 residences. According to humanitarian organizations, approximately 10 percent of Chocó’s population—roughly 69,000 individuals—experienced displacement or were otherwise affected by the disaster. Beyoncé’s statement encouraged supporters to consider donating through Food For the Poor and World Central Kitchen.
The music industry has rallied around Colombia’s recovery efforts in recent weeks. Colombian artist Shakira pledged $1.25 million toward school reconstruction, while fellow musician Karol G directed $1.2 million to affected residents through her foundation. The Colombian band Morat also announced plans to contribute ticket revenue from their Bogotá shows to relief initiatives.
