A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s Tatarstan region has resulted in at least 13 deaths, marking one of the deadliest strikes on Russian territory since the beginning of the conflict. According to Russian officials, the assault also wounded 75 people and claimed the life of a child. The overnight strike targeted the city of Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
Ukraine’s Armed Forces confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk was hit during the operation. Ukrainian drone manufacturer FirePoint stated that its FP-1 unmanned aircraft were deployed in the attack, which lasted several hours. Social media footage showed large flames and smoke billowing from the industrial site, accompanied by air raid sirens. Moscow acknowledged that both industrial facilities and residential areas sustained damage in the assault.
While Kyiv has not officially commented on the strike, Ukraine has intensified attacks on infrastructure it claims supports Russia’s military operations. Regional officials expressed grief over the casualties, with Tatarstan declaring a period of mourning. Russia reported that its air defences intercepted over 450 Ukrainian drones during the overnight period. The incident underscores the escalating scope of long-range attacks in the conflict, as Ukraine targets energy and logistics infrastructure while Russia continues striking Ukrainian cities with aerial assaults.
