Distribution company Neon has unveiled a trailer for “Artificial,” an upcoming film directed by Luca Guadagnino that examines the dramatic events surrounding OpenAI’s leadership. The movie will arrive in theaters on Christmas Day and features Andrew Garfield portraying OpenAI founder Sam Altman during a tumultuous period in the company’s history. The narrative focuses on Altman’s unexpected termination in 2023 and his reinstatement just five days later, set against the backdrop of intense competition within the artificial intelligence sector.
The film boasts a notable ensemble cast alongside Garfield’s lead role. Ike Barinholtz takes on the part of co-founder Elon Musk, while Monica Barbaro portrays former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. Additional cast members include Mark Rylance as Nobel Prize-winning scientist Geoffrey Hinton, actor Yura Borisov as former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and appearances from Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, and others.
The project experienced a notable setback earlier in its production journey when Amazon MGM Studios, which had originally planned to distribute the film, withdrew from the arrangement. The company cited that the project would benefit from another distributor, particularly following its substantial business investment in OpenAI. After several other major studios declined the opportunity, Neon secured distribution rights in June 2026. “Artificial” was written by former “Saturday Night Live” writer Simon Rich, with production oversight from David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, and Jennifer Fox.
