An American missionary held captive in Niger for nine months has been released, according to his sponsoring organization. Kevin Rideout was abducted in October from Niamey, the country’s capital, by three armed individuals whose identities and motives remain unknown. No militant group claimed responsibility for the kidnapping at the time of his disappearance.
SIM International, the organization Rideout works with, confirmed his release in a statement, noting that he is currently in good health and under the care of United States officials. The missionary is expected to rejoin his extended family in the coming days.
Rideout’s case highlights the significant security challenges facing Niger, a West African nation that has experienced frequent attacks from armed groups connected to extremist organizations. The U.S. embassy had previously warned American citizens of elevated kidnapping risks throughout the country. Niger’s security situation has deteriorated further in recent years, with the military junta that assumed control in 2023 reshaping the nation’s diplomatic relationships and substantially altering its security partnerships.
