Disney has officially greenlit a third installment in the wildly successful Zootopia franchise. The announcement came during the company’s D23 fan event, following the extraordinary performance of last year’s sequel, which shattered box office records and became Disney’s highest-grossing animated film to date.
“Zootopia 2” generated $1.8 billion globally and made history with its opening weekend, marking the largest worldwide launch ever for an animated feature. The film also earned a nomination for best animated feature at the Academy Awards. Stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan confirmed at the D23 event that their characters would return for the upcoming third film.
The franchise began with the 2016 original, which introduced audiences to rabbit police officer Judy Hopps and con artist fox Nick Wilde as they solved a mystery in the animal metropolis. The first film grossed over $1 billion worldwide and spawned a Disney+ spinoff series called “Zootopia+.” In the 2025 sequel, Nick joined the police force as Judy’s partner, and together they investigated the disappearance of the reptile population with assistance from pit viper Gary De’Snake.
With the franchise’s proven box office appeal and critical acclaim, the third installment is expected to continue the momentum that has made Zootopia one of Disney’s most valuable properties.
