His announcement coincided with indications from both Ukrainian and Russian sources that US negotiators may soon travel to the region for discussions. During the same address, Zelenskyy accused Russia of planning to exploit its upcoming parliamentary elections as a mechanism to justify a new wave of military recruitment. He alleged that Moscow intends to launch a substantial mobilization effort in the autumn months following the elections, potentially recruiting hundreds of thousands of additional troops by year’s end and into the following year. Russian officials have previously disputed these claims, stating that further mobilization is not required.
In separate developments, the United States confirmed that Russia had released a former American military serviceman who had been detained for several years on assault charges.
