Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter has seen a significant increase in defensive snaps during recent training camp sessions. The cornerback/wide receiver, who missed nine months of competition, received 37 total snaps during day 14 of camp, with 32 dedicated to defensive work. This represents a new high for the second-year athlete and reflects the coaching staff’s desire to give him extended time on the defensive side of the ball.
Head coach Liam Coen explained the strategy behind expanding Hunter’s defensive reps, noting that the focus is on improving his technical skills and mental preparation at cornerback. During the expanded defensive session, Hunter demonstrated productive performance, recording a pass breakup against rookie receiver CJ Williams and providing solid coverage on deep routes. He also impressed coaches with his ability to set the edge on run plays, evidence of his improved strength after gaining 13 pounds during the offseason.
Hunter’s increased defensive workload follows a joint practice against the New Orleans Saints, where he faced his first competition against outside competition in nine months. Though he allowed one completion on a deep route, Hunter maintained a positive perspective, viewing such moments as learning opportunities rather than setbacks. The coaching staff adjusted its plans for Hunter partly based on Jacksonville’s depth chart needs, particularly with cornerback Jourdan Lewis currently dealing with injury.
As Hunter continues working with defensive backs coach Matt Araujo, he emphasizes his commitment to limiting completions and sharpening his defensive fundamentals. His combination of physical improvements, increased practice reps, and competitive mindset positions him as an important option for Jacksonville’s secondary moving forward.
