The Philadelphia Eagles will head to New England this week to conduct joint practice sessions with the Patriots, seeking clearer answers about their backup quarterback situation. The preseason opener against Baltimore last Saturday failed to provide meaningful separation between the two leading candidates for the role behind starter Jalen Hurts.
Both Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee produced underwhelming performances in the Eagles’ 24-7 loss. Dalton completed just 3 of 6 passes for 25 yards, while McKee went 6 of 10 for 35 yards. Combined, the two quarterbacks managed only 77 net yards, two first downs, and seven punts across eight possessions. The offensive struggles weren’t entirely their fault, as backup-heavy rosters and conservative play-calling limited their opportunities to establish rhythm or sustain drives.
This week’s practices in New England should provide a more rigorous evaluation. The sessions will feature stronger opposing defenses and more competitive conditions than a preseason game with many reserve players on the field. Dalton brings 15 years of NFL experience and proven stability, while McKee offers youth and prior game-winning experience. Despite these contrasting strengths, neither has demonstrated clear superiority. Coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Sean Mannion must use the upcoming week to determine which quarterback offers the best insurance policy should Hurts become unavailable during the regular season.
