The Cincinnati Reds have signed right-handed pitcher Darius Vines to a minor-league contract following his stint in the Mexican League. The 28-year-old has been assigned to the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats.
Vines most recently played for Tigres de Quintana Roo in Mexico’s independent league, where he compiled a 3.32 ERA over 15 starts before being traded to Acereros del Norte in August and subsequently released. Prior to his international assignment, the pitcher spent two seasons with the Atlanta Braves, appearing in nine games with a 5.82 ERA.
The Braves originally selected Vines in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Draft after his college career at California State University, Bakersfield. His professional journey also includes being drafted by the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs in earlier draft years. At St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, California, Vines was a versatile three-sport athlete, competing as a shortstop in baseball, quarterback in football, and point guard in basketball.
Vines made a notable MLB debut in August 2023, becoming the first visiting pitcher to debut at Coors Field while pitching six innings and allowing two or fewer runs in a victory against Colorado. He followed this performance with another strong start later that season against the Chicago Cubs.
