The World Health Organization has criticized the Trump administration’s approach to childhood vaccination policy, asserting that recent decisions contradict extensive scientific research. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued the statement following an executive order signed by President Trump that aims to reconsider school vaccine requirements and separate the MMR vaccine into individual doses.
Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who now leads the administration’s health efforts, has consistently advocated for a debunked theory linking the MMR vaccine to autism. Tedros countered this position by emphasizing that scientific consensus firmly establishes vaccine safety and explicitly rules out any connection to autism.
The WHO chief stressed that vaccination decisions should rely on independent scientific analysis rather than political considerations. He further cautioned that splitting vaccine doses or delaying immunizations could compromise children’s protection against disease without providing additional safety benefits. Since assuming his current role, Kennedy has initiated a comprehensive review of established vaccines, modified immunization schedules, and reduced investment in vaccine development programs.
