Burning Man concluded its 40th annual festival this week, drawing over 60,000 attendees to Black Rock City in the Nevada desert near Reno. The event, which culminates with the burning of a massive wooden structure, proceeded largely as expected for participants who gathered to celebrate art, music, and community in the temporary settlement.
The festival’s conclusion was marked by tragedy, however, as three attendees died during the event. Sampson Tshombe, in his mid-50s, was found unresponsive on September 3 and could not be revived. The following day, 51-year-old Armando Ramirez died while being transported to a hospital in Reno. On September 5, a 60-year-old man identified as Craig Mann was discovered dead in his camp. Officials have not released causes of death for any of the three men, and all three cases are undergoing autopsies and toxicology testing that may take several weeks to complete.
Festival organizers expressed condolences to the families and friends affected by the deaths. According to records, approximately a dozen people total have died at Burning Man since its inception, with most deaths attributed to accidents, overdoses, or medical conditions. Last year marked the event’s first homicide when a first-time attendee was fatally stabbed during the final night celebrations.
