Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua has opened up about his personal struggles in a candid interview ahead of the team’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. The star receiver revealed that he turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism while dealing with the pressures of professional football and public life.
During his conversation with Netflix, Nacua explained that he has a tendency to avoid conflict and isolate himself rather than confront difficult situations. He attributed his alcohol use to stress stemming from his elevated status as an NFL player, the expectations that come with performing at an elite level, and challenges related to co-parenting his 10-month-old son. Nacua emphasized that he struggled to ask for help and typically sought escape routes from his underlying anxieties.
The 25-year-old receiver noted that his time in a rehabilitation center provided him with the opportunity to engage in honest conversations and address his issues directly. Moving forward, Nacua expressed that his primary goal is to become someone his son will respect and admire as he matures.
Nacua finished last season as a statistical leader, recording 80 first downs for the Rams offense. As the team pursues a Super Bowl championship this season, the receiver appears committed to maintaining his focus on both his personal wellbeing and professional performance.
