WEBTOON is launching into the rapidly expanding microdrama market with a new initiative called Short Dramas, debuting six live-action vertical series on August 17. The platform will adapt popular romance webcomics including “Maybe Meant to Be,” “Love Bites,” and “I’ll Marry Your Brother” into bite-sized episodes designed for mobile viewing. This move positions WEBTOON to capitalize on a format that generated an estimated $11 billion globally in 2025, with the United States emerging as one of its most lucrative markets.
The decision to enter microdramas represents a natural extension of WEBTOON’s existing business model. Unlike competitors built exclusively around vertical video, WEBTOON already operates an established platform where millions of readers consume serialized stories on their phones. According to Fred Lee, an executive overseeing the company’s vertical drama expansion, the narrative structures of webcomics share fundamental similarities with microdramas—episodic storytelling, compelling hooks, and cliffhanger-driven narratives. This existing audience familiarity gives WEBTOON a significant advantage, as the source material draws from webcomics that collectively have attracted over one billion global views.
The initial slate focuses exclusively on romance, a genre that dominates the microdrama landscape. The six adaptations feature diverse subgenres spanning supernatural YA romance, workplace melodrama, revenge narratives, and comedic pairings, intentionally designed to appeal across different age demographics. Lee emphasizes that these vertical adaptations are supplements rather than replacements for the original webcomics, potentially creating a “virtuous cycle” where audiences engage with stories across multiple formats and platforms.
