Webtoon Entertainment is capitalizing on the expanding popularity of vertical video content by launching a new “Short Dramas” initiative. The platform is converting several of its most successful romantic properties into microdramas tailored for this format, including titles like “Love Bites” and “Maybe Meant to Be.” This strategic move reflects the growing demand for short-form vertical media consumption among audiences worldwide.
Each microdrama will consist of 40 to 50 episodes, with individual installments lasting between one and two minutes. The initial slate includes five titles adapted from existing webcomics that have accumulated hundreds of millions of views globally. The shows will debut with a freemium model, offering select episodes at no cost before requiring users to spend coin tokens to access additional content. Both English and French language versions are now available to viewers.
The expansion underscores Webtoon’s evolution beyond its core webcomic platform. With 155 million monthly active users and a successful 2024 U.S. public offering, the South Korean company continues to diversify its content delivery methods. By adapting popular intellectual properties into bite-sized video episodes, Webtoon positions itself at the intersection of traditional storytelling and emerging digital consumption habits.
