French distribution company MMM Film Sales has secured international sales rights to “Agata the Writer,” an Australian film featuring actress Mia Wasikowska. The project will debut at the Venice Film Festival as part of the Venice Days competition section. Filmmaker and visual artist Kuba Dorabialski directs the production, which comes from producer Alex White, known for his work on the acclaimed film “Babyteeth.”
The narrative follows Agata, a Polish-Australian author who travels from Sydney to Sarajevo to research material for a war novel. During her time there, residents challenge her intentions and her authority to tell their stories. As Agata wrestles with creative doubt, mysterious artworks begin vanishing, adding an enigmatic layer to her experience. Ultimately, the film explores how Agata discovers her story focuses not on conflict itself, but on moments of human perseverance amid its aftermath.
MMM Film Sales expressed enthusiasm for the project, praising its distinctive perspective on how storytelling engages with historical events and collective memory. The company highlighted Wasikowska’s portrayal of a writer seeking to reconnect with her continental roots while confronting lingering trauma. Dorabialski’s directorial approach combines both lightness and intellectual depth, examining connections between narrative construction, personal identity, and artistic obligations.
Screen Australia provided principal funding for the production, with additional support from Creative Australia and the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund. This marks Dorabialski’s debut feature film, following his extensive career as a visual artist and filmmaker based in Sydney.
